- The 7th grade Algebra main lesson block is a relaxed introduction to the world of variables, expressions and equations. The emphasis is on developing a clear and true understanding of the fundamentals of Algebra.
* A scale and a mystery introduce the solving of equations. * Students' various names and nicknames provide metaphors for understanding expressions. * Stories make the fundamental rules of algebra easy to remember. * The idea of debt helps students understand negative numbers. * "Translating" helps make the meaning of equations clear.
After this lesson block we move on to other subjects, leaving them confident and eager for more! They have a chance to assimilate this introduction and have a sturdy foundation to build on when they begin the full Algebra I course in 8th grade. Many of our graduates are able to take Geometry or Algebra II as freshmen in high school.
