SHELTER PROJECTS

Third graders learn about traditional and modern dwellings throughout the world. Many teachers begin this study with a class walk into the woods where students are instructed to build “debris huts” with any found objects in the woods. Students have great fun learning how to get a structure made of branches, rocks, leaves, etc to function as a dwelling, challenging them to actively think through design, planning and construction. The children then take what they have learned through the curriculum and apply to that building their own shelter project and present them to their class.
